"Flushable" Wipes Cost $9,866 of Damage to Our Septic System (Avoid This Mistake!)

It took a while for me to forgive my husband.

We’ve been married for 27 years and I’m used to him not listening to me.

Usually, it’s just small things… like asking him to stop leaving his underwear on the floor or trying to get him to put the dishes in the dishwasher instead of the sink.

But none of those things irritated me more than this stupid “flushable” wipes issue we’re dealing with that has already cost us $9,866!

That’s how much it cost to repair our septic system after it was destroyed by these so-called “flushable” wipes he’d been using for years.

"FLUSHABLE" WIPES
ARE NOT FLUSHABLE!!!

The worst part is that this happened a month before a big trip we had planned to San José del Cabo for his 60th birthday. We’d been saving up for a year and now I have to tell everyone, “Well, we can’t go to Mexico anymore because Frank ruined our toilets!”

It’s so embarrassing. I don’t even like talking about it.

But I feel like I need to share this so others don’t make the same mistake we did.

Because here’s the deal…

My husband had been buying these wipes for probably 5 years. Then about a year ago I saw a documentary about how they were causing millions of dollars of damage to our sewer systems.

I mentioned it to Frank and he just said, “I don’t believe it. I’ve been using these things for years and never had an issue.”

Famous last words.

I think it was literally the next week when all this nasty sewer water started backing up into our bathtub. When the plumber came over he saw the bag of wipes sitting on the bathroom sink and said, “Don’t ever use those again. I’ll run my diagnostics but I can almost guarantee those are the problem. I’ve seen it too many times.”

He was right. Two days later, he asked us to come out to the front yard to see something he found in our septic tank.

“This here is called a ‘fatberg’,” he said as he pointed to the nasty rock-like thing he had pulled out of our septic system that was now sitting on our lawn for all the neighbors to see.

“This is what those ‘flushable’ wipes do!

They don’t break down like toilet paper and this is the result.”

He was the one who first mentioned Fohm as a better alternative. So after he left I did some research and here’s what I found.

I really wish someone would’ve told us about this before!

What is Fohm?

Fohm is a brilliant new bathroom dispenser that turns normal toilet paper into a “wet wipe” without hurting your pipes.

You simply place the toilet paper you already use under Fohm’s touchless motion-activated sensor. And then the perfect amount of fluffy foam comes out, turning your TP into what feels like a soft wet wipe.

“This is crazy – it feels exactly like a wet wipe!” is what my husband said after trying it.

How does Fohm work?

Fohm is super easy to install. It takes about the same amount of time as it does to change a roll of toilet paper. You don’t need any tools and there won’t be any holes in your wall when you’re done.

Simply stick the adhesive tape to the wall, let it sit for 1 hour, then slide the dispenser on.

And as someone who hates clutter (I just finished Marie Kondo-ing our house!) I love the fact we no longer have all these annoying packages of wipes everywhere (they did not bring me joy). Plus, it actually looks good in our bathroom.

When you’re ready to use it, you just put the toilet paper under the dispenser and it will automatically squirt out the perfect amount of foam to use.

It’s way more hygienic than wet wipes where you have to touch the package every time after you, well… you know… Anyway, it’s just gross if you think about it! Fohm is motion-sensor activated so it’s 100% touchless.

And guess what? It’s about HALF THE COST of wet wipes!

Not only are we NOT clogging our pipes and septic tank with “flushable” wipes anymore, but we’re actually saving money by using Fohm. I actually figured out our precise savings and put it towards our credit card bill to pay off the septic tank repair.

And to think… I almost didn’t want to try it at first because I have sensitive skin!

But thankfully, Fohm readily shares the ingredients… and I was happy to see there were no parabens, alcohol, or sulfates. I also saw it was fragrance-free and was made up of 98% of plant-derived ingredients like aloe, green tea, and chamomilla.

Even better: Our guests LOVE it!

I ended up buying a Fohm for each of our bathrooms and whenever guests use it they tell me how much they love it! This always makes for a good laugh…

I should probably start buying stock in Fohm considering how many people have purchased one after using ours. But I’m just happy if it saves at least one other couple from going through what we went through with the damaged septic.

How does Fohm compare to “flushable“ wipes?

Well, the biggest difference is that Fohm really is safe to flush – whereas wipes are not. Despite what the clever packaging might say, “flushable” wipes are a leading cause of plumbing damage, and once your pipes are busted, you could face a huge repair bill.

There are also a few other advantages over wipes, including:

  • Cost savings. “Flushable” wipes get very expensive over time. The average “flushable” wipe is around $0.07 per use, but Fohm is only $0.04 per use.
  • Safe, Plant-Derived Ingredients. Fohm’s ingredients do not contain dangerous chemicals that can be found in “flushable” wipes.
  • Touchless. Unlike wipes that you have to touch, this is 100% motion-sensor activated, making for better hygiene.
  • Stylish. “Flushable” wipes are typically something you want to hide under the sink, but Fohm is stylish and unique, complementing the look of your bathroom.
  • Eco-Friendly. You can feel good knowing you’re not adding to the massive problem that “flushable” wipes are causing our cities' sewer systems and the planet.

Overall, we have been extremely impressed and satisfied with Fohm. Although it couldn’t turn back time, we were able to schedule a new trip to Mexico next year, and we’re confident that there won’t be any nasty “septic surprises” to stop us this time!

UPDATE: Fohm Is Back In Stock (For Now) – Here’s Where You Can Try It.

Clearly, a lot of people are switching from “flushable” wipes, which is good to know!

The creators of Fohm are currently running a special promotion – for a limited time, you’ll get 1 FREE Fohm when you buy 2. We don’t know how long this will last, so definitely act now to take advantage of it!
